REVOLUTIONARY TYING MATERIALS

UV2 Fly Tying Materials from Spirit River

This morning I was enjoying a hot cup of coffee while reading my latest issue of the Economist, and I came across an article in the science and technology section called "High Tech Angling - The One That Didn't Get Away"

In this article, they detail all of the innovations which have come about to increase angler's odds of catching fish. Of course they detailed all kinds of lures, scents, and fish finders - did you know they now have fish finders that have mulitple beams to probe the water all around one's boat? Not only can these read the bottom, they can actually differentiate between gamefish and baitfish and calculate a fish's distance from the boat.

Why Could UV Materials Work Better Than Traditional Fly Tying Materials?

One of the most interesting innovations that affect fly anglers chances of catching fish is the development of UV materials for tying flies. Now, we fly tyers have long been using UV materials in the way of natural feathers (peacock herl and peacock eyes are good examples). The reason that UV materials work so well in attracting fish is becuase fish - especially trout and steelhead - have highly evolved visual cortexes. Human eyes only absorb light in three colors, where a fish eye has an extra light absorbing ability and can see up to eight different pigments. Not only do the extra receptors allow fish to see more on the color spectrum, these receptors also give the fish increased sensitivity to other wavelengths. Those wavelengths include ultraviolet light.  Whammo! The better the fish can visually preceive the fly, the better chances you have of hooking up!
