RAIN MEANS MORE BUGS & FEWER PEOPLE

When Weather Spoils The Fly Fishing

I know that the weather is a bit suckie right now, but the fishing has been pretty descent. The Salmon Fly hatch is gone and the early summer hatches are in full swing. We've been floating the waters between Trout Creek and Macks Canyon on a daily basis and not seeing a soul. The weather has brought a mixed bag of inconsistent hatches, but regardless, the fish are responding. Last Friday I found myself and my dudes in a ferocious downpour below Whitehorse rapids sight fishing spent Caddis, PMD spinners, and Midges in the film to not-so-selective rainbows. Then we rolled on down to a text book PMD flat and watched rafts of newly hatched PMD's float down....without a single sniff. I've seen this weirdness before...in this same spot. There was one little nose, a fin, another. Cripples! If  Hazel said it once, he said it a thousand times....fish what you don't see on the front end of a May fly hatch. It makes perfect sense. Cripples are easy pickin's to an opportunistic trout.  As excited as we were to charge out and take care of business, it was very inspiring to sit and marvel at natures threads. Through a bit of frantic trial and error, we did discover a pattern that got some attention. Fast and furious...(not government style) As quickly as it started it ended. But, we did enjoyed the action while it lasted. Fortunately for us we had the river to ourselves and picked apart every rising fish we saw that day...and we saw lots! It did take a day to dry out from that trip, but it goes to show you that even in one of Oregon's famous "spring deluges" outstanding dry fly fishing presses forward. I know that it difficult to get fired up about going out in June with all of your rain gear in tow. At one point on Saturday morning I thought I was Steelhead fishing in October. My hands were frozen and water was draining down my arms from my second completely soaked jacket...with a big shit eating grin on my face. Stay thirsty my friends. July is just around the corner.
